How to set up an XBox 360 live?

Setting up your XBox 360 to be able to play games online using Microsoft XBox live can be pretty frustrating, especially if you just can't wait to start playing with friends. This step by step guide to setting up XBox live will show you how to start online gaming.

What you will need

You will need an XBox 360 with built in WI-FI or a standard XBox with a wireless adaptor, a high speed modem and an Ethernet cable or wireless connections.

Setting up using an Ethernet cable - Part One

Turn off all power to the XBox 360 before removing the main power lead and any other wires which are connected to the back of the system. Remove Ethernet cable from your modem and remove the power cable. Wait about a minute to allow the modem to reset internally before continuing.

Setting up using an Ethernet cable - Part Two

After waiting for a minute, plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the modem. The other end of this cable can then be connected to the corresponding jack in the back of the XBox 360.
Plug the power cord back into the modem, and allow the system to reset. Bear in mind this may take up to 3 minutes.
Once the modem's lights are on, indicating power and connection, plug the power cord of the XBox back into the system and turn the power on.
You should be connected to the internet.

Setting up using Wireless - Part One

If using a wireless adaptor with an XBox 360 without a built in WI-FI router, connect the adaptor by locating the adaptor slots on the back of the console. The adaptor should snap into place. Connect the adaptor's wire into the USB point, and extend the aerials. If using an XBox with an internal WI-FI router, you may skip this point.

Setting up using Wireless - Part Two

Turn on the power to your console and using the XBox Dashboard, locate the menu 'My Xbox' and select the sub-menu 'System Settings'. From here, select ‘Network Settings’ and then ‘Configure Network’. This should bring you to the ‘Basic Settings’ tab, from which you will be able to select ‘Wireless Mode’. Select ‘Scan for Networks’ and once your home network is detected, enter your secure network password and choose to 'Test Network'. Press 'Yes' when prompted.

Creating an XBox Live Profile

If you have a Windows Live ID (used for many Microsoft products such as Hotmail and Zune membership) enter your details when prompted. If you do not have a Windows Live ID, one can be easily acquired from many Microsoft websites or through the XBox Live Set-up process itself. A few details are required, but registration is free and quick. Go to ‘My Xbox’ on the console dashboard and select ‘Join Xbox Live’. Follow on-screen instructions to connect.
