What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a free Debian base Linux operating system, which will work on any type of PC. It will even work on an old out-dated computer. It's a powerful operating system that provides millions of tools which will enable the productive side of anybody's mind. There are different distributions of Ubuntu, and each of them brings something different to the table. Sometimes, they are oriented toward a particular group of people. For example, if you are a student, you might want to get the Edubuntu distribution. It will come packaged with all the software a University student might need. You can even try Ubuntu without the need to reinstall anything. You can play with it directly from a CD. You just have to download it, burn it, and then restart your computer with the CD. You will be impressed how it looks and how easy it is to use.

Is the software free?

Most applications on a Linux platform are open-source, which means you can download the software, change it to make it your own, and re-distribute it. In other words, yes. You don't have to spend money for a word processor or graphic design application. You even don't have to search hard for them. Just launch the Package Manager application, and it will search the repositories for the software you want. It will download it, and it will install it for you. There is even a lot of applications that comes out of the box. Just to name a few, you have burning tools that will help you with your CD writing. You have a word-processor application that will allow you to save and open Windows format. You have games, and internet browser for your pleasure.

Ubuntu has an amazing community. Everyone will share information with everybody, and they are extremely helpful. The best place to get help is the main Ubuntu site.
