The story of Weird Al Jankovic's You Don't Love Me Anymore

Many people remember the hilarious ‘spoof’ version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. This song and accompanying video featured a ‘send up’ of the late iconic singer, which apparently even had the man himself rocking with laughter. The man responsible for this light-hearted version of the Jackson classic was the appropriately name ‘Weird Al’ Jankovic. A less well-known, but equally funny, song of his is ‘You Don’t Love Me Anymore’. Here is its story.

Background

While ‘You Don't Love Me Anymore’ possibly makes you think of another classic, this is actually an original song that was written and recorded by Jankovic in 1990. It is essentially a soft-rock ballad that is acoustic-led. You Don't Love Me Anymore lyrics The humour here begins with the lyrics. While it begins in a fairly typical love-affair mood, it descends into a hate-filled and destructive rant to the point where the girl of Jankovic’s affections actually threaten him with murder. Jankovic meanwhile simply wails on about how the ‘Flames died Down’.

The humour

The humour is then, further increased through the contrast of Jankovic’s delivery with the lyrical content. Jankovic plays the dumb, love-struck guy who, having received a myriad of insults (You cheap, ugly Antichrist) and even bodily harm (shaved eyebrows, chest hairs extracted with pliers and a hole drilled in his head), simply bemoans that he ‘Gets to thinking that you don’t love me anymore’.

Extra tracks and remixes

Interestingly on the album ‘Off the Deep End’, ‘You Don’t Love Me Anymore’ is followed by a song that consists of ten minutes of absolute silence before a crashing six seconds of drumming, feedback. Jankovic’s manic screaming hits the listener with what Jankovic himself called the "most annoying six seconds of audio ever recorded". Apparently, the inclusion of this ‘song’ was designed to scare the listener if they had left their CD player on. Remixes In 1992, a mad and twisted disco-mix of ‘You Don't Love Me Anymore’ replete with loops and samples, was released by Mobile Disco Records. The video Much like his aforementioned version of ‘Thriller’, perhaps the best part of this release was the video. It is essentially a parody of the Extreme classic ‘More Than Words’, although it actually begins where his send-up of the Nirvana song ‘Smells like Nirvana’ finishes (featuring a Dave Grohl impression that has the drummer ripping his wig off in anger).
