The top five
The complete list of best-selling games in the UK according to UKIE follows, but first, this article will take a look at the top five. Number one in the charts was "Call of Duty: Black Ops". Developed by Activision, the FPS game grossed around £113.8 million in its first week of release alone. "FIFA 2011" followed closely in second place, with the game also finishing top of the Sony PSP chart. On the third place was the Wii game "Just Dance", although, developer Ubisoft will be pleased with having three games in the top ten. Fourth was the cowboy adventure "Red Dead Redemption" and fifth was exercise-related "Wii Fit: Plus." Director General of UKIE Michael Rawlinson was quoted in a statement as saying, "2010 was another strong year for the video games industry, with record breaking sales figures from games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops. Rawlinson went on to conclude that, "the industry has widened beyond all expectations and will continue to expand exponentially in 2011."
Other platforms
Dividing the list up into specific platforms shows that Call of Duty: Black Ops tops both the Sony Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 charts, proving that first person shooters are still a hit with console gamers. The number one and number two games for PC were football manager 2011 and 2010, with management and strategy games clearly more at home on the personal computer. Professor Layton And The Lost Future topped the Nintendo DS chart, while Fifa 2011 was the most purchased game on the PSP ahead of platformer LittleBigPlanet. Conclusion It is clear from the 2010 list that the annual sports games have a firm hold on the market and it's difficult to see that changing in the near future. Console gamers, on the other hand, prefer something with a bit more action and 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops was a real blockbuster. With sales figures continuing to rise, the gaming industry is only going to become bigger.
