Define 'fastest street legal car'
Within the motoring community, it is generally agreed that 'fast' is in reference to top speed and 'quick' implies acceleration. So, only top speed shall be covered in this list. Secondly, there are people who modify their own cars into very fast 'street legal cars' but only production cars will be referred to.
Top five fastest production supercars:
5. McLaren F1: 240mph (386kph)
The world's fastest naturally aspirated super-car and one of the benchmark super-cars as regards to quality, weight and packaging, this BMW V12 powered rocket raised the bar very high for other car makers to beat. Its lightness and lack of driver aids made this a very difficult yet rewarding car to drive at the limit.
4. Koenigsegg CCXR: 250mph (402kph)
This car is the fastest offering from one of the latest fledgling super-car companies. Made in Sweden, this car follows a similar ethos to the McLaren: light weight and high power. Over 1000bhp, less than 1300kg and a super slippery shape help this car reach insane speeds, even by super-car standards. Be warned, handling isn't one of the Koenigsegg's strengths. Even professional racing drivers have had accidents when pushing this car to the edge of its performance envelope.
3. 9ff GT9R: 254mph (408kph)
Another relatively new super-car maker, this German company thinks that regular Porsches simply aren't fast enough. By taking a standard Porsche, making it longer and over twice as powerful (over 1100bhp), they have created this monster. A poor turning circle and a chassis setup aimed at straight line speed, think of this car as the dragster in this list.
2. SSC Ultimate Aero: 256mph (411kph)
The only non-European company car in this top five, this American super-car focuses on straight line performance rather than handling. Despite being very fast, this car hasn't enjoyed the same level of recognition as other new companies in this class, mainly due to the poor build quality and an interior that is terrible when compared to its rivals.
1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport: 268mph (431kph)
The current king of super-cars, this car has already become a legend the world over. Over 1100bhp, over 1000lb-ft of torque, this four wheel drive super-car is considered by many to be the best car in the world. This is because it is also incredibly comfortable, extremely well built and can be driven with ease by anyone that owns a driving license. It is by far the most complete super-car of all time and deserves to be number 1.
