Digging deep

Digging deep

This week had an interesting start; while at one of my schools the teachers invited me along to a Newari ceremony after work. The mother of one of the teachers had died a year ago to the day and they have a ritual with a priest to remember the day and for puja (prayers) I went along to the home and saw the woman's sons being blessed and offerings m
3 months home

3 months home

Looking forward I hit the ground with a thump and really struggled to find my feet. J hit the ground running and is only now allowing himself the time to process what happened and what we saw and did. Coming home is crap. I can't round up three countries and 5 months in one sentence and yet, unfortunately, that's what most people want. How can I ex
What a week!

What a week!

On Monday I only had one class because the kids had a football match, so they all left school to play or watch. The teachers had to stay or they wouldn't get paid, so I left them with an empty school and went to sit in the sun. On Wednesday I had drama and a teaching workshop with John and Emma that I had organised. I ended up missing all of this t
Teachers day

Teachers day

So this week has been good fun. On Friday I finally got my grade 7s to perform their physical theatre. It was very short but I was so proud of everything they produced and that they did it with only guidance from me. I think the next two weeks will be drama games! On Saturday we went up to KUHS for results day (parents evening but in the morning).
Busy busy

Busy busy

Well, I have not written for so long and yet so much has happened. We have been really busy with school and parental visits. John's mum was here for 2 weeks and now my mum is here with her friend Mo. So, over the past few weeks we have been to Kirtipur - a town just outside Kathmandu to visit two children who are sponsored by John's parents, which
Shrawan

Shrawan

I have been waiting for the month of Shrawan since I got to Nepal! Everything about it makes me smile. For the whole month woman wear green bracelets, paint mehndi on their hands and fast every Monday. Why do they do this? Well, for the health of their husbands of course! (My first fast lasted to breakfast, I hope to do better next week!) The tradi
Bed - the reason we're here

Bed - the reason we're here

Let me tell you about Bed. He is the reason we are here, the seed of Nepal was planted with John many years ago when he came rushing home from school one day asking his parents if an exchange teacher could stay with them and the rest is history. At the time of writing Bed has retired from teaching. His final role was that of principal at Sanjiwani
Travelling mummies

Travelling mummies

So, for two weeks I have been with mum and Mo checking out all the sights. It has been great fun to do some touristy stuff as we have both been quite busy  and focused on building a life in Dhulikhel. Mum came to see our home and the schools we work in and we did some papier mache work in the hostel for blind kids which was very messy but great fu
Best birthday

Best birthday

No Paula blog would be complete without a birthday run down. Those who know me well know I am a great believer in celebrating birthdays. Firstly, I have had some amazing birthdays abroad: Turkey being the first followed by Menorca, Egypt, Brazil - too many to name. And the one thing I know is that time difference can get in the way. John, of course
Monsoon moments

Monsoon moments

So we are both back to work this week. The government schools are on vacation so we are spending a little more time in the private school KUHS. My grade 7s will perform our physical theatre piece next week before the end of term and there is still much "polishing" to be done. J went to the big smoke on Thursday to extend our tourist visas which was
