A guide to Ashford College, Kent

With campuses ranging over areas such as Ashford, Dover and Folkestone, Ashford College in Kent is a college of further and higher education. Originally, called South Kent College, it went on to merge with West Kent college. Here, you can read a guide to Ashford College, Kent.

The beginning of the college

The college was originally called South Kent College (SKC). In April 2010, it was recommended in a KPMG report that the college should merge with West Kent College. This was known as South & West Kent college. With various college campuses now working together, they trade under the name of K College. College campus The college campuses are all based around the south west of England. Their locations are in Dover, Folkestone and Ashford. The Ashford branch of the college has three different campuses which are South Kent College and Ashford 6th Form Centre which is situated on Jemmett Road. There are also Ashford School of Art and Design on Henwood Industrial Estate and finally, Ashford School of Art and Design which is on Tufton Street. Future plans Plans were proposed to create a new campus called Ashford Learning Campus that will be able to teach up to 14000 students, which was meant to have started teaching from 2011. These plans were replaced with a new £20m plan for a campus based on Elwick Road that is supposed to commence teaching in the spring of 2013. This would also follow the sale of the site at Jemmett Road.

Courses and governers

A broad range of courses on offer There is a vast array of courses on offer at the college covering a huge amount of areas of study. These include modern sciences, art, hair design, engineering, furniture crafts and IT and electronics, to name just a few. Levels of study range from GCSEs up to degree level. There are partnerships in place with the University of Kent, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University that help to broaden the scope of learning opportunities on offer. Governors Since 1st April 2010, the governing body of the college comprised of 20 members. Two of these are students at the college and three are members of staff.
