The early years
The Roc
Representing Harlem, New York, Dame Dash from an early age was the personification of the word hustler, so it was more than luck that caused Jay-Z and Kareem "Biggs" Burke to come together to build a dynasty that would go on to be know as "The Roc".
Hard journey
Alongside rapper Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, a talented rapper from Brooklyn, New York, Damon Dash set out to take over the music industry, although it was not as easy as they believed it would be. With Damon running the business aspect of the company, they struggled to land Jay a record deal after meeting with a number of suitors. With the situation looking bleak, Damon decided it best for them to start their own record label and create, promote and sell their own music.
Model
With that, Dame Dash broke the mould for what would be a business model many would follow for years to come.
The Roc-A-Fella era
Success
After the success of Jay-Z's first independently released album, "Reasonable Doubt", Damon found himself in a great position to negotiate, landing the Roc-A-Fella label a deal under the Island Def Jam imprint.
The good life
From that point on, everything that Dame touched turned to gold. From signing multiple artists and releasing multi-platinum albums to starting the clothing line "Rocawear" which would go on to gross hundred of millions of dollars, Damon and the Roc-A-Fella team were a highly successful group of individuals.
The downfall
Things started to slowly crumble, starting with death, which tore apart the Damon Dash and Aaliyah's relationship in 2001. Jay-Z and Damon's relationship started to sour and eventually, they went their separate ways.
Post Roc-A-Fella and the future
Life after
After leaving Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam, and selling his stake in the Rocawear clothing company, Damon Dash set out to forge his own path. In his personal life, a marriage to Rachel Roy and two daughters followed, although they would divorce in 2009.
New business
Rumours of Damon Dash being broke started to circulate, but despite this, Damon started DD172, an umbrella company that covers music, art and various media ventures.
Final word
With a business mind like Damon's, success is always around the corner for the mogul and his name will always be synonymous with one of the greatest Hip-Hop dynasties in music history.
