Alvin Community College is a public community college in Brazoria County Texas. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the main accreditation body for southern schools. The college awards associate degrees and certificates in a number of areas in the Arts and Sciences. The self-description provided on the college website states, “We provide educational opportunities in workforce training, academics, technical fields, adult basic education, and personal development”. The college was rated as one of the top ten of community colleges in the U.S. by the Aspen Institute making it eligible to compete for a one million-dollar prize awarded by the Institute for community college excellence.
Academics and conituing education
The college offers Degrees that can lead directly to obtaining jobs or enable the applicant to move onto a four-year college. They offer the Associates of Applied Science (AAS) in areas which can be used to enter the job market immediately upon completion, the Associates of Arts (A.A.) and Associates of Science (A.S.), intended for students who want to continue their education in a four-year college. In addition to certificate programs, a number of which provide the necessary requirements to obtain a job in that field. In addition, the college offers courses in Adult Continuing Education focusing on Workforce Development which provides individuals with a beginning to a new area of study, the ability to upgrade their training and skills, or personal enrichment. Some courses are partnered with area business to provide an opportunity to learn real life skills as applied to actual companies or areas of employment. They also offer special senior courses through this department.
Student activities
Student clubs and organisations includes areas of the performing arts such as Theatre and Drama, academics such as the History Club, Religion such as the Baptist Student Ministries and future careers such as the Alvin Paralegal Association, among many others. Student activities are also provided throughout the year and they include art exhibits, festivals and carnivals hosted by the college and concerts. Regarding sports, the college is a member of the Region XIV Athletic Conference in Baseball and Softball. The college also provides the opportunity for students to engage in various recreational sports such as Racquetball and Soccer among others.
