A mattress topper is used to cover a mattress. It can either completely encase a mattress or lie on top of it. They have a number of uses which can range from adding extra protection and life to a mattress to adding an extra level of comfort. The advantages of using a mattress topper are manifold. They should be considered by anyone wishing to to protect a new mattress or to add extra life to an old mattress which may have a lumpy, uneven surface that leads to an uncomfortable night's sleep.

There are many different materials which are used in mattress toppers and these should be taken into consideration. There are types which use memory foam (also known as visco foam), standard polyurethane foam and latex foam. With memory foam toppers, there are many plus points that should be considered before choosing a different type. Memory foam mattresses are heat sensitive and contain cells within its structure which open up when in contact with body heat. This compresses the cells around it and allows a comfortable base to be formed whilst at the same time being very supportive for the sleeper. Because of the supportive nature of memory foam, many people find these to be beneficial, especially those who are unfortunate enough to suffer from neck or spine problems. Natural fillings
Other types of filler for mattress toppers include feathers and down. In hotter weather, these can be beneficial in aiding a comforting night's sleep in using the natural air flow around the feathers to help keep the sleeper cooler. Even better quality feather toppers are available which are double cased. Each compartment keeps the down and feathers separate and also helps the topper keep its shape.

Deciding factors before purchasing

When deciding which sort of mattress topper to buy, obviously expense comes into play. Cheap memory foam, whilst making a difference to the whole sleep experience will be noticeably different to a higher visco mattress topper competitor. People with allergies might also prefer to consider a topper which contains nothing but man made fibres as these are far more resistant to mould, mites and other bedtime nasties.
