A guide to bullet proof glass

Bullet proof glass is a kind of glass that is made to withstand even the extreme force of a raging bullet. It might look like an ordinary glass but has extraordinary abilities of strength. The industrial term used for the bulletproof glass is bullet resistant glass, the reason being it cannot totally prevent a bullet from affecting its surface.

The two main types

The two types of bullet proof glass mainly used are laminated glass and poly-carbonate thermoplastic. Both types of glass use a different procedure for their strength. Laminated glass was put into use during the early years of World War 2 and has been a revelation ever since. It is extremely effective but the disadvantage of using it is its bulky weight and broad thickness. The process of making laminated bullet proof glass involves bonding layers of glasses together using a special agent, preferably polyurethane. The other kind of bulletproof glass i.e. poly-carbonate thermoplastic has become widely used today. It has a specific characteristic of distributing the entire force applied on the glass to the whole surface. The action takes place as follows. The bullet when it hits the glass isn't able to penetrate because the two layers of plastic and glass flatten it out and reduce its speed slowly to nil. Some of these glasses can withstand multiple rounds but some are good enough to handle only one bullet.

Its uses

Bulletproof glass has amazing abilities and can be used for different purposes. The most common use is to prevent bullets. Hence, it is used in different places. It is used in bullet proof windows for cars. Hence they serve as security purposes in order to protect the important celebrities. Another such approach is used in military application. An armoured car can be designed with such glasses. A glass used in an armoured car can be made to weaker on one side and stronger from the other; so that the person sitting inside can easily fire at the enemy but the enemy from outside cannot penetrate the glass. It is also used by police forces around the world for their shields as it is much lighter than any another metal and still provides the strength nearly equal to them.
