A guide to iron on patches

Iron on patches are a convenient way to cover holes in a garment. They can also be used to decorate a book bag, jacket or backpack. They are a great way to make a fashion statement and show off your favourite cartoon characters or favourite bands. Patches are easy to find in arts and crafts stores or online, and they are easy to apply yourself at home using an iron.

Heat the iron

Step one
Plug in your iron and turn the setting to either cotton or high heat, depending upon what type of iron you own.
If you are not sure what setting you should use, refer to your iron’s owner’s manual.

Heat the garment

Step two
Lay down the item or garment flat down that you are ironing the patch on.
You can lay the garment on an ironing board or a table.
Make sure the area is clean and dry.
Place an unfolded clean bath towel on top of the area where you are ironing the patch.
Press the heated iron on the spot for approximately eight to ten seconds.
This will enable to attach the patch to it.

Step three
Remove the towel and replace it with the patch.
Position the patch exactly like you want it to appear on the garment.
Cover the patch with the bath towel, and press the heated iron on the patch for approximately
eight to ten seconds.
Move the iron over the patch gently to transfer heat to all parts of the patch.
It is not necessary to apply a lot of pressure, as the heat that causes the patch to stick.

Allow patch to cool

Step four
Remove the towel and allow the garment to completely cool before using it.
It is best to not use the garment for a few hours up to one day after ironing on the patch to ensure it stays securely attached.
Heat from a clothes dryer can melt the adhesive on the patch, so it is best to let the garment air dry.
Final word
If the patch becomes loose over time, you can sew on patch.
Sew from inside of the garment. Sew the patch’s edges on the outside of the garment neatly.
