A guide to the Pocono Mountains

The Poconos Mountains are located in north-eastern Pennsylvania, mainly in Monroe and Pike counties. They form part of an upland area of the Allegheny Plateua. The wooded hills have a popular vacation area of the Poconos, resorts and hotels dot the region, which is centered largely on outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting and skiing.

The Poconos have been a popular vacation destination for people from all over the north-eastern United Stats since the early 20th Century. Quakers founded the resorts Buck Hill Falls and Pocono Manor and, later, Skytop in the early years of the last century.
This allowed visitors to experience its forests, lakes, hills and rivers. Romantic vacations, as well as outdoor adventures, are suited to the 2,500 square miles of breathtaking territory.

Outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting are popular in the region.
Hunters can chase white tailed deer, wild turkeys and ruffed grouse amongst other prey, while fisherman can test their skills against the like of large-mouth bass and rainbow trout. Hikers can experience truly remote trails and you can also try some serious mountain-biking. Other sports
Water is all over the region, and visitors can do some kayaking or even ride the white water rapids on a raft.

The Blue Mountain Ridge is the site of the Appalachian Trail, as well as being a major site for the autumn migration of birds of prey. The Pocono Raceway, a major automobile racetrack, is home to two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in August each year. There are several Scout Camps and Jewish Summer Camps in the region and winter sports facilities are also frequent.
The Camelback Ski Area has the most ski runs in the Poconos, as well as being one of the more popular ski areas, peaking at around 2,133.

Geography

Location
The Delaware River flows through the region.
The Lehigh and Lackawaxen Rivers also flow through the Poconos. Elk Hill's North knob is the highest point in the region, reaching 2,693 feet. Final word
There are no major population centres in the Poconos, even if the population of the area has been growing recently.
Some holiday homes are also being turned into permanent residences.
