A guide to the map of Florida

Florida is a state located in the south east of the United States, with much of it being a peninsular located between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. Known for its oranges, vacation industry and swampy terrain, the state is nicknamed The Sunshine State, reflecting its largely sub-tropical climate.

Description

Florida has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States. Only Alaska and Michigan of the other sates have larger water areas. Much of Florida is at or below sea level, and the state south of the city of Orlando is low-lying and flat, with little recognisable high ground. The north west of the state is rockier and features woodland and rolling hills, though the elevations only range from 100 to 250 feet or so. Britton Hill is the highest point in Florida at 345 feet above mean sea level, with no other state's highest point located at a lower altitude.

The Atlantic Ocean forms the eastern boundary of the state, with the Gulf of Mexico making up its western sea boundary. The state of Alabama lies directly to its north, on the Atlantic Coast. Georgia lies to Florida's north western boundary. University
The state's political capital is Tallahassee, also the location of several universities and colleges, including Florida State University and Florida A&M University. Jacksonville is the state's most populous city, with a population of just over 800,000.

Attractions in Florida for the visitor are numerous. A map of Florida cities will show you that Miami, the state's largest and most iconic city lies in the south east, on the Atlantic coast, north of the Florida Keys and south of Fort Lauderdale. Lake & amusement park
Lake Okeechobee, the seventh largest freshwater lake in the United States and interesting for its exceptional shallowness, is located the north west of Miami, but is south east of Tampa. Close on the map to Orlando on the Gulf Coast of the state, that area of central Florida is famous for its amusement parks. Florida Panhandle
The Florida Panhandle is an approximately 200 miles long and 50 to 100 miles wide strip of land in the north west of the state, which sits between Alabama to the north and west, Georgia to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
