Carpet prices: The facts

Carpets have a very long history, which is not surprising considering how uncomfortable bare floors feel when compared to those with even the most basic of coverings. The first recorded use of carpets may have dated back to the Neolithic Age. Floor rugs are available today in various pricing levels. This guide will attempt to list the carpets from the least expensive to the most.

Remnants

Remnants are the most inexpensive of carpets thanks to the fact that they are remnants, i.e., left over. These are available at carpet stores. The reason they are available is the fact that they may be left over from a bolt or roll of carpet, just as with fabric. In other words, a roll carpet may contain x number of square yards. After the carpet roll is cut to size, oddly sized - often too small for rooms - pieces may remain. These pieces are sold at discount, which is a benefit for those on a budget. Best yet, these remnants can include various kinds of carpet, from short-napped to more expensive Berber carpet.

Retail carpet

This form of carpet is the next most expensive because they range from the low-napped carpet, to shag (long-napped), to Berber carpet. These carpets vary in price due to the materials from which they are made, the tightness of the weave, whether they are stain-resistant (think Stain or Scothguard), and how they are finished. While this carpet may be available at discount stores or in sale, they are more expensive than remnants.

Throw rugs

Some of the most expensive carpets have names like 'throw' or 'area rugs'. The reason is this: they include the category of Oriental rugs and Aubusson carpets. What sets these carpets aside is that they include carpets that are hand-woven by artisans. Oriental rugs, which include Indian, Turkish, Persian, Caucasian and more, are works of art. Some carpets that date back to the 17th century are so rare that they are the more expensive of all. Within this category are carpets that range from antiques to modern-day works of art that can be just as easily laid on the floor as hung on a wall.
