Built by Wendy
Overview Founded in 1991, Built by Wendy is a reflection of Mullin’s interesting creative sense. Every season, the designer draws inspiration from pop culture and music, apart from her personal experiences and from classic and contemporary film, art, and literature. There has always been an attempt to give a fresh look to traditional designs. The roots and the beginning The Chicago-based designer laid the building bricks of the retail brand, while she was still a student at the University of Kansas. Upon moving to New York in 1992 to study at FIT, she started working part-time at two downtown record stores, where she began selling her own collections. It was only in 1995 that Mullin started wholesaling her collections, and two years later, she set up her first flagship store in the city. She established her second retail store in the year 2005, and since then, the brand’s growth has been phenomenal. Today, the company has a long list of fans, including Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams.
