New York-based, Wendy Mullin’s clothing line “Built by Wendy” is regarded as the perfect blend of the classic and the contemporary. From graphic tees to abstract floral print sundresses, the “intentionally low-key” brand has acquired a cult-following of trend-setters, musicians, artists and actors. This article discusses some of the very unique creations by the brand.
Built by Wendy
Overview Founded in 1991, Built by Wendy is a reflection of Mullin’s interesting creative sense. Every season, the designer draws inspiration from pop culture and music, apart from her personal experiences and from classic and contemporary film, art, and literature. There has always been an attempt to give a fresh look to traditional designs. The roots and the beginning The Chicago-based designer laid the building bricks of the retail brand, while she was still a student at the University of Kansas. Upon moving to New York in 1992 to study at FIT, she started working part-time at two downtown record stores, where she began selling her own collections. It was only in 1995 that Mullin started wholesaling her collections, and two years later, she set up her first flagship store in the city. She established her second retail store in the year 2005, and since then, the brand’s growth has been phenomenal. Today, the company has a long list of fans, including Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams.
Trendy jeans One of the brand’s most successful creations has been a limited-edition premium denim line, called Wrangler-47. Priced from $65-$210 (as on 29.06.11), the collection is one of Built by Wendy’s most successful collaboration. Apart from this, Built by Wendy has its skinny low rise jean collection called the Dreamcatcher. At $101 (as on 29.06.11), the collection is trendy and chic with an embroidered, feathered BBW Dreamcatcher emblem. 2010 Fall Collection The brand’s Fall 2010 collection is another interesting range, inspired by the architecture and pattern of post-war Germany’s Bauhaus Movement. The collection features trendy sportswear in bright shades, like red, fuscia, purple and even orange. Tunics, overalls and hooded jackets dominated the collection, and the entire look was that of comfort. 2011 Spring Collection Built by Wendy’s, the latest Spring 2011 collection is casual, free-spirited and feminine. Sultry sundresses and comfort shorts are the main highlights of the collection, designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia of free, idyllic summers. Track pants Another extremely popular collection by the brand is their track pant with an elastic waist. Popularly known as the “slim-loose”, these pants are silky and comfortable, yet not incredibly loose. Final word Thus, it is seen that all her creations are classic and innovate. Hence, they are indeed must-have for every fashion lover.
