How does Wi-Fi work?

Internet is a very crucial necessity of present times and is used incessantly in offices and homes. This article will discuss the features and importance of a wireless internet connection or Wi-Fi. You will get familiar with the process and technology that enables you to establish an internet connection without any ports or wire through Wi-Fi.

Wifi

What is Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is a wireless network that uses radio waves, just like radio and television, to facilitate the users with an internet connection. The radio or transmitter used in Wi-Fi is quite similar to those used in walkie-talkies, cellphones, and other such devices. In this process, the 1s and 0s are translated into radio waves and these waves are again changed to 1s and 0s. Functioning of Wi-Fi The communication process of a Wi-Fi is very much similar to a two-way radio communication. It works when the computer’s wireless adapter translates the data in a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. This signal is received by a wireless router, which sends the data to an internet using a physically wired Ethernet connection. This process repeats itself in reverse direction, wherein the router translates the information into a radio signal and sends it back to the system’s wireless adapter. How is Wi-Fi different? Besides the little similarities that Wi-Fi shares with cellphones and
walkie-talkies, there are also many differences between them. Frequency The first difference is in frequencies, meaning Wi-Fi works at a frequency of
2.4 to 5 GHz whereas cell phones work at a much lower frequency. This difference in frequency helps the network to transmit larger data.
Networking standards Secondly, such networks work upon 802.11 networking standards, which provide uninterrupted internet connection through WANs inside vehicles and other movable properties.

Positive points

Today most of our work is dependent on the internet and we often require it during traveling and in other places where we might not find an internet port. At such places, Wi-Fi internet connections are a much convenient and reliable option. It is also helpful in large offices where internet connection is required for a large number of machines placed at a distance from each other. Nowadays, even airports and university campuses provide such connections for the convenience of students and travelers.

Negative points

Special equipment is needed in order to make a Wi-Fi connection.
