Types of quick diets
Low carbohydrates diets
A diet low in carbohydrate, such as the Atkins diet consists of no more than 40 grams of carbohydrates a day. The drastic reduction of carbohydrates from the diet effectively results in rapid weight loss.
Disadvantage
With a low carbohydrate diet, the dieter obtains energy from his fat and protein intake which are relatively high in this diet. For this reason, the safety of this diet is being questioned by many health experts like the American Dietetic Association which states that the body needs about 150 grams of carbs daily for normal metabolic activity. Furthermore, a diet high in fats and proteins may predispose people to heart and kidney disease.
Low calorie, low glycemic diets
Diets which are low in calories (1500 calories or less) and low in glycemic score (low carbohydrate content) are popular among obese diabetics. It helps them control both their blood sugar levels and their weight. It can be an effective way to lose weight rapidly and can potentially decrease risk of heart disease, hypertension and other chronic diseases.
Disadvantage
The rate of losing weight may not be sustained because it reaches a plateau when the body tries to conserve its energy when it senses the need to balance the loss. It is not advised that one undertake this diet for long periods of time.
Medifast diet
The Medifast diet is a widely accepted weight loss programme that has existed for more than two decades now. It is endorsed by health professionals consisting of a low calorie, low carbohydrate, and high protein diet that uses meal replacement drinks to achieve rapid weight loss.
Disadvantage
In order for anyone to avail of the meal replacement drinks one needs a doctor’s prescription. It is not recommended for everybody, especially those who have known diseases affecting metabolism. Meal substitutes may also be more expensive than regular food.To achieve consistent weight loss within safe limits, it is always advisable to seek medical advice.
