Travelling through the tri-state area

The ‘tri-state area’ is the term that is often used to describe the area including and surrounding the metropolitan area of New York. Many people travel around this area as business is strong here and many people also travel in it for tourism. People often say that they are going ‘up-state’ to see the infamous ‘fall’ in the Hamptons, for example. This article details different ways to travel around the tri-state area.

Travelling the tri-state area by car

Transport culture America is well known as ‘a car country’. This is largely because of its size (and partly due to a reluctance to adopt ‘greener’ modes of transportation. From New York (largely considered the hub of the tri-state area), obviously there is a rather big expanse of water (the Atlantic) to the south-east.
Highways in the tri-state area Elsewhere though, it is served by a large road network which allows access around, above and beyond the tri-state area. Interstate 95 runs through New York from south-west to north-east, connecting New Jersey to Connecticut (indeed, the highway runs the whole length of America’s eastern seaboard). Running east out of the city, through Pennsylvania, is Insterstate 80 (I-80) - the second largest Interstate Highway in the United States (after the I-90). It is also served by the Interstate 76 (East), which runs along Southern Pennsylvania, and a variety of other roads.

Car rental, coaches and train.

Car rental and coaches If one wants to travel on this road network, but doesn’t have a car (likely if one lives in one of the non-car friendly cities), there are alternatives. One can rent a car from companies like Car Hire 3000, US Rent A Car or Hertz or travel by coach with intercity bus companies such as Greyhound Bus or Coach USA. Train
Another popular method of travelling round the tri-state area is by train. This is because although, it is true that America is regarded as a car country, North-East America has better public transport because it is more densely populated. For example, Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City serves 7,000 buses and 200,00 commuters daily. Subway The New York City Subway (underground) system is the busiest in the Western Hemisphere and Grand Central Terminal is the world's largest station (by platforms). Train services Train company Amtrak provides train services to cities in the tri-state area such as Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C, in addition to long-distance services. There are also many public and private airports areas which can be used for air travel.
