Freeware has grown in popularity and sophistication to a point where many examples are now standards among home and small business users alike. But many users are still unaware of the quality of software that is available to them, without having to shell out a single penny. This article provides you with the types of free computer software.

Anti-virus software

Free anti-virus and firewall software tops the list of downloads at websites such as Download.com. Among the most popular by far is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, which offers solid and reliable internet protection against most forms of malware, including viruses and spyware. The built-in security suite is extensive, including an email scanner, link scanner and anti-spyware among other features. Another popular, free anti-virus and spyware solution is Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus, offering a very similar product to AVG. Both AVG and Avira have become respectable anti-virus solutions, with regular virus definition updates, and are now the favourite choice of network administrators operating on a budget.

Firewalls for anti-intrusion

No computer should ever be without a firewall program, especially on
Microsoft-powered computers, against which there are a vast array of intrusion techniques. Firewall software acts as a wall against intrusion from Internet malefactors. Like AVG and Avira, ZoneAlarm Free Firewall has also become somewhat of a household name. The software includes outbound protection, anti-phishing and a behavioural detection network. It's a great option for anyone looking for a relatively lightweight alternative to expensive commercial firewalls.

3D modelling and design

3D design programs are no longer the reserve of graphic designers. There are a few excellent examples that are also very easy to use. Google SketchUp is quick to learn, and allows you to create 3D models, add textures, and then upload the results to Google Earth. You can also share your designs over the Internet, or print hard copies. Sweet Home 3D is aimed at interior designers. It's easy to build your house, then decorate it with wallpaper and furniture. There's also a "Virtual Visit" option which allows you to walk through your design in the first-person perspective.

Diagnostic tools

PC owners with software tools such as Advanced SystemCare Free 4 will be better off financially. The freeware offers many tools for speeding up your machine, and ensuring general system care. These software collections provide features such as a registry scan, the fixing and removal of broken shortcuts, hard drive defragmentation, and access to system optimisation options that are not normally available through an operating system's basic control panel. Computers over time will accumulate junk files, broken links and disk fragmentation, all of which contribute to a much slower system.
Diagnostic tools will go some way to fixing this.
