What is community nursing?

Since the days of Florence Nightingale, the role of the nurse has come a long way. Applying bandages, making sure that the patients eat and drink, take their medication and stay clean has long been overhauled by nurses who are independently working on their own as physician's assistants, delivering babies as midwives and giving personal care to patients whenever needed.

The role of nursing

If there was ever a job that was looked down upon, it was the job of nursing. Florence Nightingale, who is recognised as the mother of modern nursing, went outside of the country for her first mission with 38 women whom she had trained as nurses. It is needless to say that they were not wanted and for the first ten days according to the record, they were shunned, probably as being unnecessary busybodies, who did not know their place in society. That has changed however, and the field of medicine, today, would not be complete without those people in nursing services, who are identified in their nursing attire as they help the sick and comfort their families through difficult times. Nurses are masters of many trades. They are consultants, psychologists, doctors and even ministers of hope for those who are terminally ill. They have been called upon to run community jobs as heads of hospices and administer prenatal health classes to expectant mothers. Today's nurses are highly qualified and their roles and responsibilities continue to increase and expand as the world's population multiplies. In some areas of the world, the only medical personnel that exists is the nurse.
