Using bamboo for furniture is a practice begun by the Chinese at least 7000 years ago. Just as they used bamboo for paper, shoes, coats, tiles and so much more, using it for furniture was a logical progression. While bamboo is still used to make furniture, the practice of making furniture that resembled bamboo was popular in 1740 to 1760 and in the 18th and 19th centuries. Finding bamboo bedroom furniture or bamboo-styled furniture is possible today.
Stores carry that bamboo bedroom furniture are Mercuro, Bamboozled and others. While Mercuro's furniture is in the more traditional style and includes bamboo tables and bamboo beds, Bamboozled is something more. The company uses large pieces of bamboo logs to create a Balinese styled bed, a low bed made in the Japanese style, classically styled beds, a super-king four-poster, bedside tables, wardrobes, bureaus and more. The range of bamboo bedroom furniture is surprisingly broad.
Antique stores or auctions
If you are interested in finding bamboo-styled bedroom furniture, you will have a better chance by going to an antique store or auction. There, you may find Sheraton occasional chairs with bamboo turned legs and arms dating back to the 1700s, chairs and tables from the Regency era, as well as other pieces of furniture. These pieces will look lovely in a bedroom due to their light construction and finish - some are even painted in yellow and have caned seats. You may also find bamboo-turned cabinets that can serve as jewellery boxes.
You may also find Victorian-era bamboo furniture made by such makers as
E C Abbot, Mathew Bass, Jacob Iversen and more.
Custom bamboo furniture
Perhaps you would prefer to design your own bamboo furniture, whether it is in the older, bamboo-turned style, the bamboo furniture of the Victorian era, or furniture that happens to be made of bamboo wood. All are possible, and can be quite enjoyable as a project. Making a delicate divan bed with turned bamboo legs could look quite nice in a dainty girl's bedroom. More sturdy bamboo furniture made in the Arts and Crafts style could grace a hunter's bedroom at a hunting lodge. As when milled, bamboo makes a richly-coloured wood, it would lend itself to any style of bedroom furniture that you design.
