A band biography of The Amateur Transplants

The Amateur Transplants are a British musical comedy duo who perform satirical parodies of popular songs, amongst other things. Consisting of Dr. Adam Kay and Dr. Suman Biswas, their speciality is live performance, though they found wider fame via a comedy record which was a download hit. This article is about the biography of The Amateur Transplants.

Origins and work

The Amateur Transplants both studied medicine at Imperial College in London. Much of their work concerns medical topics, and they particularly enjoy making fun at doctors who have trained at different medical schools to them. Live performance The duo have recorded and released three albums: 'Fitness to Practice', 'Unfit to Practise' and 'Have Yourself A Sweary Little Christmas'. Live performance is their real forte though, and they have received plaudits for their concerts at the Edinburgh Festival and have been recommended by 'Time Out' magazine as an act worth seeing.

London Underground song

The act is most famous for its paean to the staff of London Underground. Known as 'The London Underground Song', it was an Internet and download favourite during the London Underground strike of 2005. This helped the act to find a wider fame, away from the comedy circuit in the capital. Based on the famous song by The Jam, 'Going Underground', the song's lyrics contained abusive language, but that did not stop it from reaching the number one position in the iTunes Comedy Chart, with a reported four million downloads. The band gives all of the proceeds of this song and ten percent of all of their sales to the Macmillan Cancer Fund.

Other points

The Amateur Transplants' songs 'Snippets' and 'Careless Surgeon' make fun at the students of other London medical colleges, specifically King's College London and Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Live performance
In addition to their live albums, the group has also released a DVD of live performances. Entitled 'The Black and White Menstrual Show', it came out in 2007 and featured mainly songs from their first two albums, as well as a handful of other numbers. It was recorded at the New Players Theatre in London. Strong language Due to the quantity of strong language, the band's album 'Fitness to Practice' comes with a typically wry warning on the band's official website, which states that the album "should not be bought for an elderly maiden aunt."
