A biography of Peter Vardy (Philosophy Lecturer, Author)

Peter Vardy is a British academic, specialising in the subject areas of theology and philosophy, who has published a range of texts dealing with the philosophy of religion. He is currently the Vice Principal of Heythrop College in London. Prior to his academic career, Vardy was a chartered accountant. Read this article to learn more about Peter Vardy.

Overview

Dr Peter Vardy has been in position as Vice Principal of London's Heythrop College since 1999. He was born in 1945 and prior to his career in academia, Vardy was Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Institute of Marketing. He also worked as the chief executive of several companies. Qualifications Vardy's qualifications include a Master's Degree in Theology (with distinction) and a Ph.D (on ‘The Concept of Eternity’) from Kings College, London. In addition, he has given lectures on Philosophy of Religion, also at Kings College, and at the Institute of Education, London as part of the Master's Degree in Education programme there. Additionally, he has been Chair of Governors of Shebbear College, an institution which is Britain’s second oldest Methodist school, located in Devon. He has also worked as a member of the Methodist schools committee, a body which co-ordinates the work of Methodist schools in the United Kingdom.

Texts and ideas

At Heythop, Vardy's teaching work centres around the following courses and programmes. His ‘Concept of God’ course is for second and third year Philosophy and theology students, and for those students who are taking the BA in Psychology and Philosophy and the BA in Psychology and Theology. Vardy also teaches ‘Philosophy of Religion’ for first year students in the BA in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, as well an optional course in the thought of Sören Kierkegaard, focusing particularly on the reading of some of Kierkegaard’s most significant works. Vardy also delivers the Master's degree Philosophy of Religion core course for the University of London’s M.A. in Philosophy and Religion, run by Heythrop College. Texts Some of Vardy's key texts as a writer include: 'Business Morality, People and Profit' (1989), 'The Puzzle of God' (1990), 'The Puzzle of Evil' (1992), 'The Puzzle of Ethics' (1997) and 'The Puzzle of Sex' (1997). He has also worked with other authors, including 'The Puzzle of Ethics', which was co-authored with philosopher Dr Paul Grosch.

Other points

Vardy continues to visit Australia and New Zealand several times annually, running courses on ethics, philosophy, the Bible and Science and Religion in all the capital cities. Peter Vardy the theologian should not be confused with the company which deals in used cars in Scotland.
