A guide to Australian states

The sixth largest continent in the world, Australia is a beach paradise with its coastline stretching on over 50000 kilometres. Australia is the only nation in the world that has its own entire continent to govern. The country has six states and two territories, each of them with their own specifics. This article will present some of the most important characteristics of the states that form the map of Australia.

Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland

Victoria Dubbed as the “Garden State”, Victoria is located between the 39th parallel and 34thdegree of latitude south. This state enjoys a relatively temperate climate but with a typical Australian twist. Thus, temperatures of 40 degrees in the shade may be followed by thunderous storms and long droughts. The capital of the state is Melbourne which was also the official capital of the country before Canberra. From a tourist’s point of view, this state is perfect as it combines beautiful beaches, ski resorts, mysterious forests, historic cities and many other attractions. New South Wales This is the most populous state of Australia and it has its capital at Sydney. It is a rich state with industrial resources, agriculture, mining and maritime outlets. The diversity of the landscapes make it one of the most populous states for tourism. The famous Mount Kosciusko is located in this state offering beautiful views in the winter when it’s covered in snow. Queensland Queensland is the only Australian state located entirely in the subtropics and tropics, being crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn. The capital of the state is Brisbane and here, you will find the amazing Great Barrier Reef: The most beautiful coral reef in the world.

Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania

Western Australia With the capital at Perth, Western Australia covers 2.5 million square kilometres and has 12500 kilometres of coastline at the Indian Ocean. This is the most isolated region of the country with 2/3 of the population concentrated in the capital. Perth is connected by train to the East Coast with a straight line route that crosses almost the entire continent. South Australia Two of the most important cities in this region of Australia are Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, founded during the Gold Rush by settlers in search of the new El Dorado. Here, tourists can visit the Barossa Valley Wine, Flinders Rangers and the famous Kangaroo Island with its Chase National Park. Tasmania Tasmania is located south of Bass Strait and has a maritime temperate climate. Tourists choose this region because it is home to curios fauna such as the famous Tasmanian Devil. Some of the areas here provide excellent hiking facilities.
