Historical background
Overview
It has around 70,000 subscribers and a website which is said to attract over 90,000 visitors every month.
The magazine also hosts related events for contractors, project owners, engineers, architects, government regulators and industry suppliers.
ENR's aim today is to connect diverse sectors of the industry with a wide range of coverage that everyone needs on topics like business management, design, construction methods, technology, safety, law, legislation, environment and labour.
It has a long history in the engineering field and is able to trace its beginnings to two publications.
The Engineer and Surveyor (first published in 1874 by George H Frost) was later renamed The Engineer, Architect and Surveyor, then became the Engineering News and American Railway Journal and was finally known as Engineering News.
The other magazine was originally known as The Plumber and Sanitary Engineer, then The Sanitary Engineer, was renamed the Engineering and Building Record, and ultimately became the Engineering Record. In 1917, Engineering News Record was born when the Engineering News and the Engineering Record merged.
Further development
The union of the McGraw and the Hill Publishing Companies wasn't plain sailing at first.
The Engineering Record was seen as down market while the Engineering News was considered aloof.
The staff at the Record lobbied for editorial independence but their publisher wanted to join forces with the News because of its high standing within the profession and the first issue of Engineering News-Record was published on April 5, 1917.
The acronym that now appears on the publication, ENR, was officially adopted in 1987.
Rankings
Rankings of the largest construction companies
The Engineering News Record annually compiles rankings of the largest construction companies.
These top engineering companies include the largest American general contractors, architectural and engineering design firms, speciality contractors, construction management firms, environmental engineering firms, program management firms and international contractors.
As most of these firms are privately owned the financial records provided in the ranking tables are considered a unique benchmark of the industry.
Like most publishers, ENRs owners have embraced electronic journalism and is proud of its website, Enr.construction.com.
This site provides up to date news and views as well as historical records and data.
