History
McPherson College was chartered by the leaders of the Church of the Brethren in 1887, as part of a plan to increase the educational opportunities for the growing American population west of the Mississippi. The site of McPherson in Kansas was chosen that same year.

The Church of the Brethren traces its origins to Germany in 1708. It is a Protestant sect, which is avowedly pacifist and non-violent, with the New Testament, providing its rule of faith. The college's stated mission, which is in greater part derived from this religious ethos, is: "To develop whole persons through scholarship, participation and service."
