An album review of Carrie Underwood's Mama's Song
Carrie Underwood is one of America's top country artists, being the recipient of awards from Teen Choice, Billboard, Tulsa's Spot Music, Oklahoma Today and the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame. She has also won Female Vocalist Of The Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 2006. This article will review the third Carrie Underwood album which includes the syrupy track called "Mama's Song".
Carrie's debut album
The album Some Hearts won the Billboard Music Awards number-one selling album of the year in 2006 for Carrie Underwood. Some Hearts was voted as one of the one hundred best-selling albums of all time. One month after the release of Play On, Some Hearts was announced in Billboard magazine to be the biggest selling country music album. One outstanding track on Some Hearts was Before He Cheats which some critics feel that she drew on this song when she recorded Cowboy Casanova.
Carrie's second album, Carnival Ride was her first to enter the charts at number one. It was released in October 2007.
About Mama's Song
Play On was released in November 2009 and is the album featuring several of Carrie's hits including Mama's Song. It was her third album, and scored the highest first week sales for any female artist for the year, with three-hundred-and-eighteen-thousand copies. Mama's Song was written by a team of songwriters comprising of Carrie Underwood, Martin Fredriksen, Luke Laird and former American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi. The focus of the song is the moment when a young girl decides to leave her mother and live with her new love. Many critics found Mama's Song too sentimental and intense but it won praise from some music writers for Carrie's subtle vocal treatment of the song. Mama's Song was chosen to be the first single used to launch the Play On album, but it was the fourth single released for air play, following Cowboy Casanova, Temporary Home and Undo It. As of August 2011, the album had sold well over two million copies in America. Some of the songs appear to have been arranged to showcase Carrie's powerful voice but a simpler approach might have served the songs better. The video for Mama's Song featured Carrie's mother, Carole as well as her husband, Mike Fisher. The song was the third Carrie Underwood single to fail to reach number one on the charts.
