Greenville College: The facts

Greenville College is a four-year private college with an avowedly Protestant Christian ethos, located in the American state of Ilinois. Associated with the Free Methodist Church, it is a small and intimate university with around 1,000 students currently enrolled. It is also a member of the Christian College Consortium and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

History & location

Origins Greenville College can trace its origins back to 1855 when it was founded as an all-female Baptist school called Almira College. It was founded by a clergyman named Reverend John Brown White, who named the college after his friend Stephen Morse's wife, Almira Blanchard Morse, who had donated $6,000 to help the school open. Changes The college became Greenville College in 1892, after a period of financial struggle led to it being acquired by the Central Illinois Conference of the Free Methodist Church. The college also began admitting male students at this point in its history.
Location Greenville itself is a very small town. Located in Bond County, Illinois, there is a population of around 6,000 people. The campus itself is situated on Interstate 70, approximately 45 miles east of St Louis, Missouri.
Confusion The college is not to be confused with North Greenville University, an entirely separate college in South Carolina, nor Greenville Technical College, another South Carolina institution.

Learning & lifestyle

Throughout much of its history, the college has focused much of its academic attention on primary and secondary educational training, with it also enjoying a good reputation for its medical and scientific programs.
Conduct
Students at the college are expected to take its Christian ethos very seriously. They must sign a document called the 'Lifestyle Statement' in order to attend the school - this is a code of what the college itself terms 'Christ honouring' conduct. This document forbids the use of alcohol and illegal drugs, use of tobacco and sexual activity outside marriage. Programs The college offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 programs of study and offers several post-graduate qualifications in education. Technologically apt The college has been quick to take advantage of modern technology, with it being the first campus in the USA to move over to a completely wireless internet system. Students & faculty
Around 800 students live on campus in halls of residence, while there are around
70 full-time members of the faculty's teaching staff. Teaching staffs are also expected to hold a strong Christian faith.
