How to clean cat urine

Cats were first domesticated about 4000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, the cat was not only considered as a vermin controller, but also as a member of the family as well. The custom of keeping cats spread around Europe, Japan, China and India. After the Middle Ages and a case of mistaken identity, the cat regained its place as a favoured pet. However, the cat might urinate where it should not. Here is a guide to cleaning the cat urine.

Step one

As soon as you discover cat pee on the carpet, blot it as quickly as you can with a soft cloth. Do not rub. Press on the cloth for about 30 seconds or more. Remove the wet section of the towel, and continue blotting the rug with a dry section of the cloth until you have absorbed as much as you can. Rinse the area of the accident with fresh water, then blot that up as well.

Step two

Start with baking soda. Dampen the soiled section of carpet with water. Sprinkle some baking soda over the dampened area. Rub the baking soda into the rug. Let it dry, then vacuum it up. This should remove some of the surface urine odour. If the smell has not improved, move on to white vinegar. Add 1/2 vinegar to a quart's worth of warm water. Sprinkle some of the mixture onto the soiled area of the rug. Cover the vinegar-sprinkled area with a towel, and weight it down with heavy items like several phone books or something heavier. Let it remain so for several hours. Remove the towels from the soiled area, and use a brush to raise the nap of the carpet.

Step three: the big guns

Buy a cleaning product that contains three percent of hydrogen peroxide, and spray it onto the carpet. Let it sit for less than 10 minutes. Blot the area with a soft cloth, switching to a dry section of the cloth until the carpet is dry. When you blot the cloth, you need to do so for at least 30 seconds. If the odour removal is complete, then you are done. If not, repeat the process again until the odour is gone.
