Intercom systems for homes can be used to page people, monitor children or handicapped individuals. There are two types of intercom systems, wired and wireless. Both systems are very easy to install, though you will need to have to some basic wiring know-how when installing wired intercoms.

Materials and tools you'll need

1) Drill 2) Saber saw 3) Pencil 4) Metal fish tape

Steps to installing a home intercom system

1) Choose the location of your intercom master station. Make sure to select an area that can be easily accessed. The master station is like the nerve station of your home intercom system and is where all functions are activated or deactivated. 2) Shut off electric power before starting the installation process to prevent accidental electrocution. 3) Estimate how big of an area you need to carve out on the wall to accommodate your intercom master station. Lean your intercom master station on the wall in between two studs, then use a pencil to trace its edges. 4) Carve out the area for your intercom master station. On each of the four corners of the outline you traced on the wall, drill 3/8 inch holes. Cut out a hole using a saber saw. Fit your intercom master station inside the hole. 5) Wiring of your intercom master station. Use the manufacturer’s installation instruction guide as reference. Find the power source that is in closest proximity to your intercom master station. Next, connect the cable to your intercom master station. Make a 1/2 inch hole on a spot in the wall that is close to the power source. 6) Insert a metal fish tape inside the hole into your intercom master station till it reaches a point where you cannot push it any further. Ensure that the cable and tape are together. Go back to your master station and get the wire back. Next, link the cable to the intercom master station. 7) Choose the mounting areas for the intercom substations. The installation process for the substations is the same as to that of the master station. 8) Link all the substations to your intercom master station. For this type of job, you would have to run a cable from your intercom master station to each of the substations. Drill a couple of tiny holes on the wall while running the cables to the intercom master station if you will be passing by corners and hallways. 9) Link up the cables and communication wires. Review the instruction guide. Connect the cables and wires to the intercom units. Test each of the units to make sure that they are working effectively. 10) To complete the installation process, secure the units to the wall.
