Get a bottle
First of all, find a suitable bottle that you can turn into an olive oil drizzler. You can use old vinegar and oil bottles or even a small wine bottle. Whichever you choose, make sure the neck is wide enough to support a cork.
Sterilise it
Now, scald with boiling water by filling it to the top and then pouring out the water. Do this in a sink and wear oven gloves to protect your hands.
Dry it
Now place the bottle in a warm oven, on gas mark 4/350°F/180°C, for a few minutes to dry and keep sterile. Remove and place on one side to cool.
Take a cork
Next take a cork, a real one, not an artificial one, that fits into your bottle. With a craft knife cut a deep wedge into one side of the cork. The wedge should be 2 to
3 mm across. You can use old wine corks or corks from fruit vinegar bottles.
Sterilise the cork
Wash your notched cork in hot soapy water, then scald with hot water as you did with the bottle. Leave to cool.
Add your oil
Using a funnel, pour the oil from your oil bottles or oil cans into the olive oil pourer. Add your cork and you're done.
Why stop there?
Use similar shaped bottles to create a matching oil and vinegar cruet set. Remember that with the vinegar bottle, you don't need to add the notch to the cork. However, you must have a cork that is easy to remove.
Make some more as gifts
An olive oil pourer certainly makes cooking with olive oil easier and less messy, but if you want to buy one, they don't come cheap. So astound your friends and family by giving them such lavish gifts as an olive oil drizzler and vinegar cruet set. They don't need to know that you made it yourself! Look out for coloured bottles to use for gift sets and consider making your own labels or tags to go on them. Once you've done this once, it's easy to do it again.
