Hook, line, sinker and lure
According to the old saying, one needs a hook, line and sinker to catch a fish but the lure is more important. As the word suggests, it means to entice a fish with a decoy. A lure can be made out of plastic, wood or a piece of metal. A lure can be for fresh water or seawater fishing. The many kinds of lures are spoons, jigs, plugs, spinners, sinkers and jitterbug lures.
Spoon lure
One of the easiest homemade fishing lures to make is the one made out of an old spoon. Cut the spoon near the bowl and file the ends of both bowl and handle smooth. Drill holes in both the bowl ends and the handle ends. Fix split rings through the four holes and fix triple hooks at one end and swivels at the other end. One side of both lures can be painted a bright colour.
Potato molds
A little twist given to the handle of the spoon lure will convert it into one of the perfect shining and wiggling metal fishing lures. Fishing sinker moulds and fishing weight moulds can be made from a large potato or from a block of wood from which one can scoop out the sinker shape. Pouring hot lead into the two kinds of lead sinker molds results in great sinkers.
Making fishing lures as a hobby
Besides sinker molds, one can make fishing lure molds from plaster of Paris or putty. Fishing lure making can be easy with liquid plastics and silicone putties. Sometimes, one may have to buy some fishing lure making supplies. With enough equipment, anything can be made from fishing weight moulds and fishing lead moulds to fishing jig moulds but cost and time must be considered. If the self-made fishing lure or jig mould is going to be more expensive than the ready-made item available at the fishing lure supplies shop, then it is time to stop. The idea is to make free fishing lures and fishing moulds as a hobby and as a way to pass the time. If one is going to buy expensive DIY moulds and fishing jigs, then there is no point in learning how to make moulds. Buying lure making supplies for fishing lure parts takes the fun out of it. Innovation with junk gives the excitement in lure making.
