How to set up laptop wireless internet access

Laptops give users the freedom to work and play on their computer from anywhere. Without WiFi internet access though, a user is either limited to offline activities, or constrained by access to a hardline router. Below is a short guide to setting up WiFi broadband access for a laptop, thus removing those limitations.

What you will need

ISP and WiFi router First of all, you will obviously need an ISP (Internet Service Provider). When contacting an ISP and when setting up an installation appointment, you will be given the choice between a traditional or a WiFi router. If the provider doesn't ask, be sure to specify the need for WiFi to avoid the possibility of the technician arriving for the installation without the proper router. Alternately, if you already have a traditional network set-up, or you would prefer not to pay the extra monthly fee for the WiFi router, it is possible to buy your own. The installation is simple and straightforward, and even a person with limited technological skills can accomplish it fairly easily. Be aware though that if you do have problems while using your own equipment, your ISP may not help you to resolve them. WiFi card Your laptop will need something to pick up the router´s signal. This can either take the form of a built-in card, or a simple USB WiFi receiver. If you are unsure as to whether your laptop has built-in WiFi, you can find out in your user's manual, or by checking the hardware list in your device manager. This is also where you will have the ability to enable or disable the card, so if you have one which isn't working, make sure that it is enabled. If you do not have onboard WiFi, a USB receiver can be plugged, so you will have no problems.

Actual setup

The set-up itself is very simple. If a technician is installing the router, he will give you the information that you need. If you are doing it yourself, simply plug in the router, and run the install disc on your laptop. Once this is done, you should be able to see available networks. The one that you want will most likely be listed by the router manufacturer's name. Click on it to connect, then go to the router's specified set-up page and complete the basic password, security, and identification information. Make sure to save the password security information somewhere safe.
