Where to find a free daily crossword puzzle
Many people enjoy the daily challenge of a crossword. The first known crossword puzzle dates back to 1890 and the first example of one appearing in Britain was published by Arthur Wynne in 1913. Since then, daily crosswords have appeared all over the place. Here, I will be showing you where you can find some free puzzles.

Free physical publications
Physical or online crosswords?
Daily crossword puzzles come in two main varieties. These are the more traditional, physical form; the sort that you would expect to find on the back page of a newspaper or inside magazines for instance or the online form. Whilst many people prefer the more traditional physical type, a number of online sites will allow you to print out their crosswords to complete at your leisure.
Printed crosswords
With daily national newspapers carrying crosswords of various levels of difficulty, there is certainly a lot of choice out there. However, this goes against the grain of this article and the fact remains clear: most of these are not free.
However, there are a number of publications and newspapers that are free and this is where you can get a daily crossword. Again, these range in various levels of difficulty so you might have to do a bit of research before you find one that is to your liking. Many publications are only available in certain areas of the UK. Below you will find a sample of some of many hundreds of free (and often localised) publications that offer crosswords for free on a daily basis:
- Birmingham Post
- Lancashire Evening Post
- Leicester Mercury
- London Evening Standard
- Manchester Evening News
- Metro
- Nottingham Evening Post
- Oxford Times
- The Sentinel (Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire)
- Sheffield Star
- Yorkshire Post
Online daily crosswords
Benefits of online crosswords
With online crosswords, you have the added benefit of them not using up any resources such as paper. Therefore, this may be considered better for the environment.
