Ways to apply for a new passport.
Identity and Passport Service
The IPS issues all passports in the United Kingdom and one way to apply for a passport is through one of their regional offices situated in many cities across the UK.
The Post Office
The Post Office offers a service known as check and send at some of its larger branches. This service allows applications for new passports to be checked at the post office when submitted, payment is then collected at this time and the application process can then begin.
Check and send service
A qualified member of the Post Office staff will check your application with you, your payment will be made at this time and all accompanying documents will be forwarded on your behalf by the Post Office.
Passports online
United kingdom citizens can apply for a passport online. The application forms can be downloaded and submitted. The application process does not begin at this stage as the IPS will then send a hard paper copy of the application form to the address on your application form for a signature. The process of application then begins when the signed forms are returned to them.
Returning your application form
The documents to be returned with an online application for a passport are detailed on the application form. These will include your birth certificate and passport photos. The photos have to be signed on the back and certified on the application form by someone that has known you for at least two years.
In person
In special circumstances applications are accepted in person, however no walk in applications are accepted and a prior appointment must be arranged with the regional office of the Identity and Passport Service.
Interviews and receiving your passport.
Interviews
The majority of applicants for new passports in the UK have to attend an interview. This is to combat identity theft, during the course of the interview a number of questions will be asked that only the applicant will know.
Return of passports
New passports will be delivered by courier to the address on the application form. This can take from two weeks to around six weeks during busy periods. Any passports not delivered due to there being no answer at the address when attempting to deliver must be collected directly from the courier or delivery rearranged.
