A guide to buying glass door handles
Glass, which is a combination of limestone, sand, silica and soda ash melted together, creates something magical. When glass was first used by early humans, it was to create a glaze for pottery. Next came glass beads, and then glass vases. Glass doorknobs utilise one of the developments in glass production which is pressed glass.

The condition
The condition of the doorknob is the most important. Glass, though durable, can be damaged. As much as possible, the glass doorknob should be free from any flaws, like chips or cracks. The glass should be mostly clear, though some glass doorknobs have small bubbles in them - an artefact of the production process. You should examine the centre. The centre of the doorknob should be blemish-free. If there is corrosion, for example, the antique doorknob made of glass will be less valuable. The overall glass should be clear, especially those which are white or lightly coloured. Check to see if there is any paint on the knob. This paint may be the result of a past renovation. This can be removed.
Colour and cut
The decorative glass knobs may come in different colours. Along with the clear knobs, there are some with a silverish hue, as well as others with a golden hue. Other colours include rose, green, amethyst and other variations. Some of the antique knobs are octagonal and floral, while others are round. Oval knobs are more rare. The knobs can be etched in various patterns, one of which is the starburst pattern.
The glass and hardware
The content of the antique glass should be considered. Antique crystal knobs are the oldest knobs. Moreover, the lead content makes the knobs heavier than those made of glass. While glass handles are beautiful, they are probably made in the present era and are just reproductions or a replica of the antique ones. The hardware of the doorknobs can vary, just like the doorknobs. They can be made of brass or even silver, and can be plain or ornate. The hardware may be sold separately, which will allow you to mix and match until you have found something which will fit in with your home's décor.
