King vs. California king

Your two options are standard king and California king. Standard king beds are wider, but shorter. This means if you need more space to share a bed, but are not especially tall and do not need more space for your height, then you should opt for a regular or standard king. California kings are slightly narrower, but longer than the regular king beds. California kings tend to be harder to find bed frames and sheets for, so this may not be the best choice unless you really feel that you need the extra length.

The mattress

Once you have decided on a size, you will need to find a king mattress. This is perhaps the most important aspect of buying king bedroom furniture because it will dictate your comfort level. While it is possible to buy mattresses online, you should think about trying them out in person first to ensure that they work for you and are nice and firm, yet comfortable enough for you to move around and sleep well on. You should think about a wide variety of different mattress styles including foam beds, divan beds or even an adjustable bed and keep an open mind when trying all of them out.

The bed

The final component to think about is the bed itself. You can simply buy bed rails made of metal for the mattress and box spring to sit on, for the cheapest option. If you want to go fancy, you can get a king head board and foot board made of a variety of materials including wood or veneer, and sold in a variety of different styles.
