Buying a mattress can be fraught with confusion due to the variety in mattress types as well as manufacturers. A rating system can be of great help by allowing comparisons between types to help selection. It is also of help to objectively qualify a mattress when purchasing it online. Mattress ratings use different criteria of a mattress but are geared towards specifying the level of support that the mattress offers. Manufacturer’s rating
Ratings
Most manufacturers have their own ratings applicable to their brand. Some follow a scale from 1 to 10 and others may follow a 3 tier or 5 tier scale. Lower ratings are an indication that the mattress is soft and does not offer much support.

Look for further specifications to understand the criteria which were used to establish the rating. For instance, an inner spring mattresses, the criteria may have been coil type, coil gauge, spring coil count, foundation, construction, padding and fabric.
This rating system is not of help when one wants to compare the same mattress which is marketed by different vendors.
ILD rating
ILD or ‘Indentation Load Deflection’ rating is a standard rating system for foam bedding. It is an indicator of the mattress firmness and how soon it regains its original shape after loading. Low ILD mattresses are very soft and generally ILD ratings of within the 18 to 20 range are recommended for firm mattresses. Together with the foam density the ILD rating can give a better idea of the mattress support. Reviews
Consumer reviews may be featured on manufacturers’ websites and on consumer research forums. Bed reviews rate mattresses based on user-experience and other subjective criteria. There are also technical reviews of mattresses which assess the mattress based on criteria like construction and material.
Look for reviews which are analytical and balanced. Though these reviews may not directly help you in selection, you can gain more awareness on the desirable aspects of a mattress. This can help you get decide on the best mattress for your requirements.
Always approach mattress shopping with an open mind. Use mattress ratings as a reference but purchase the mattress only after personally trying it out.
