A review of Amanda Perez's Angel

Amanda Perez is a multi-talented female R&B singer-songwriter from the US, revered among her peers for the honest delivery of her music. In 2003, she released an album and single by the name Angel, arguably her biggest hits to date. This article reviews both the album and single.

About Amanda Perez

Style Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Amanda Perez is an R&B artist with a difference. Whereas in appearance she may come across as the tough, no-prisoner's tomboy - stereotyped by the hip-hop and R&B genre - in reality the Mexican-American is a talented crooner who lives and breathes smooth heartfelt melodies. Musical instruments Spending time at her uncle's recording studio, Perez took to music at an early age. In fact, by the age of four she was already introducing the world to her vocal talents and learning to play the keyboard. By the age of eleven, she had mastered both the keyboard and drums and played in the kids band, Sombra Chicano Chiquitos. Powerhouse Records Perez's break came in 2001, when her infectious melancholy harmonies and lyrical talents were recognised by Powerhouse Records. She released her first album "Where You At?", and has never looked back since.

The album

Following a move to Virgin Records, in February 2002 Perez released her second studio album, Angel. The album peaked at number 73 on the Billboard 200 and 36 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-hop Albums charts. Feelings in music The album features a mix of upbeat tracks such as I Like It, Your Body Is Mine and Whoa, with hip-hop ballads like Angel, Never and Lose Pain that emphasise the vocal talent of the artist. The record is predominately a break-up album and provides the listener with profound insight into the emotional honesty of her music and feelings. Appeal Setting the album apart from other recent R&B and Hip-hop artists is the fact that in addition to playing almost every instrument, Perez single-handedly produced, wrote and arranged the entire record.

The song

Angel The song Angel is the third track from the album bearing the same name. Released in May 2003, the song peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Songs and 84 on the Hot 100 R&B/Hip-Hop songs. Most popular song Angel is a love song with Perez narrating the story of a break-up and asking God to send her an angel to ease the pain. Amanda Perez's Angel has proved to be one of the artist's most popular songs among her large group of fans.
