The concept
Background
In the TV program Extreme Make Over contestants applied to get transformed from ordinary individuals who are self-conscious about their looks, and are considered unattractive by society into someone glamorous. An 'Extreme Team' of plastic surgeons gave the contestants a Hollywood make over.
During the transformation the contestants got liposuction, nose jobs, new teeth, hair extensions and new exercise regimes, making them virtually unrecognisable from their old self. The new and transformed contestants were not allowed to be in touch with friends and family for the duration of the make over. At the end of each episode, their new look were unveiled to their relatives and friends.
The Extreme Team
The Extreme Team was led by host Sam Saboura. Dr Bill Dorfman was the dentist, Michael Thurmond was the nutrition expert, Dr Jon A. Perlman was one of the plastic surgeons and Dr Ava Shamban was the dermatologist of the team.
Running
The show first aired in 2002 and was canceled in 2007. In total there were 55 episodes that aired on network ABC. In the first season the show attracted around 11 million viewers per episode. However, the next three seasons never managed to attract that amount of viewers. Extreme Makeover Home Edition In 2003 the show Extreme Makeover Home Edition first aired. This spin off makeover show saw homes getting home makeovers. This became very popular quickly surpassing the Extreme Make Over show in ratings.
Controversy
Suicide lawsuit
In 2005 a woman who had been a contestant and had been dropped by the show because her recovery would take too long for filming, sued the show. The reason was that her sister had committed suicide, largely because of guilt over negative comments she had been forced to make for the show about her sister's appearance, according to the lawsuit. The suit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.
