Choosing the right portable storage device
Does it seem to you that your computer does not have enough space? If so, you probably need a portable hard drive to make up for the lack of space on your internal hard drive. This article will examine how you can choose the right mobile storage unit for you without breaking your bank!
External hard drives
The first portable storage option is the external hard drive. This is different from a flash drive as external hard drives are complete drives while flash drives are smaller in size and very often in space as well. These are better if you need more home storage and if you do not bring it to other places very often. How much space do I need? First, we will go over how much space is in each standard unit of computer storage: 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1024 Bytes 1 MB (megabyte) = 1024 KB 1 GB (gigabyte) = 1024 MB 1 TB (terabyte) = 1 TB Although there are higher units of storage, those are mostly irrelevant as of now. If you need to store movies, games, and other large quantities of such items, you most likely need this type of drive. It is very easy to get a 1 Terabyte drive for under 70 euros.
Flash drives
If you primarily need to be able to transfer documents or photos from one location to another, then a flash drive is probably the right storage medium for you.
How much space do I need?
Firstly, you will need to determine what you need to be able to store. Note that each photo you choose to store on it can be up to 5 MB (if you do not understand this, refer to the chart above). Documents will almost certainly be under 1 MB.
Cost
Flash drives can be found commonly priced at €15 for an 8 GB drive. An external storage device on the other hand can be commonly found for € 70 for 1 TB.
A final word
All in all, if you want "storage in bulk", then the external drive is the right route for you. If you need only a small amount of storage, if portability is critical for you and if you are willing to pay a bit more, go for the external (flash) drive.
