How to start a home group

Playing in your own band is a dream for many aspiring musicians. However, how do you go about putting together your own home group? In this article, have a look at how to start your own music group and what to consider.

Starting out

First, decide what type of music that you are going to play. Will your home group play rock, metal, classical or pop? Consider what your own musical strengths are and decide on what genre your group will be in. What instruments? Next, think of what instruments need to be played and who will do the singing if that is appropriate. Contact friends and family to see if they are willing to join the group. If you get stuck for people, then place an ad in your local paper or leave a card up in the local supermarket. To be sure that your group can really play, stage auditions before you take anyone in. Try them out by getting them to rehearse a few pieces solo and then with other musicians. All in a name Once you have your home group together, decide on a name. This can be a discussion amongst all of you but you may have to put names in a hat if there are too many ideas. Search the internet to double check that your name isn’t in use.

From rehearsing to gigging

Rehearsals are going to be important. Decide on the location and be aware that neighbours and other family members may not appreciate the noise. Using a garage or shed will be easier than a front room or bedroom. It will also be easier to sound proof. Old duvets and carpets are the best for muffling sound. Muffle a drum kit by raising it up and soundproofing underneath it. Stuff the main drum with a duvet to deaden sound. Checking rehearsal times If you think that neighbours will complain, check with them what time is best. Perhaps, they go out every Saturday morning and you and the group will be able to practise without fear of complaint. Make sure that your rehearsals are regular to keep the practise going. Playing your first gig When you have put a set together, it will be time to play live. Make yourself available to birthday parties and family celebrations to start off. Ask if your local pub would give you an hour. Keep asking around and you will soon get your first gig.
