New York One: The facts

New York One, also referred to as NY1, is a 24-hour news television channel which focuses on matters in the five boroughs of New York City. It is available to over 2 million cable TV customers in NYC, as well as to some small adjacent areas of New Jersey and New York State.

History

Background
Conceived by Richard Aureliio, who at the time was the president of Time Warner Cable's New York City cable group, in 1991, Paul Sagan became NY1's vice president of news and Steve Paulus the station's news director after its launch. The station originally launched in September 1992, with the first broadcasts coming from its newsroom in the National Video Center in Manhattan.
In January, 2002, it moved to an all-digital facility at Ninth Avenue, in the Chelsea district of Manhattan, Later, the station developed quickly, and its signal was temporarily broadcast internationally in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, to subscribers of the television station Oxygen, whose premises in Manhattan were unable to be used at the time.

Programming

Features
The channel's output consists mainly of a rolling news service, with largely pre-recorded items showing as part of half-hour segments.
Obviously, the news focuses on events in the NY City area, and sports and weather updates are also included.
Not much of this is real-time, live coverage though since most are pre-recorded and on rotation.
Breaking news is updated live though.
Other programs
The channel also features human interest segments, such as 'Scholar Athlete of the Week' and 'New Yorker of the Week'. A popular program which is not part of a rolling news segment is 'The Call', which consists of a live call-in and write-in hosted by John Schiumo.
Viewers have been encouraged to write or phone in after voting for the top NY news stories of the day. The station also offers intensive political coverage in its show 'Inside City Hall'. Robert Hardt is the political director of the station.
'On Stage' is a half-hour program which focuses on the theatre in the New York area. Final word
A Spanish language version of the channel also airs to digital subscribers, called NY! Noticias.
