About Family Matters

Plot Family Matters focused on Carl Winslow, wife Hariette Winslow, their sons Eddie Winslow, daughter Laura Winslow and youngest daughter Judy Winslow. They are a black middle-class family living in Chicago. They live with Harriette's sister Rachel Crawford and her son because Rachel's husband has passed away. On top of that, Carl's mother moves into the household. Very often, the next door neighbour, Steve Urkel, comes over to the house. Focus on Urkel Urkel was not introduced on the show till half way through the first season. When the producers realised that nerdy next door neighbour, Steve Urkel played by Jaleel White, was getting most of the laughs, the show started to center more on Steve's character. Before, it was more about the Winslow family and their interaction. Later, it was more about Urkel. Theme song The theme that was used for most of the series was called 'As Days Go By'. It was performed by Frederick. Filming The episodes were shot in front of a live studio audience. It was filmed in Burbank in the WB studios.

Family Matters ran for a total of nine seasons. It first aired on the 22nd of September 1989 while the last show was broadcasted on the 17th of July 1998. In the first season, the average Nielsen ranking for the show was number 32. The next year, it climbed to number 15 . As for its final season, it was down to 99.
