Even children's furniture existed in the Viking era, and was pictured in a 1601 tapestry woven in Switzerland. The furniture was both tall and low, reflecting the various stages in a child's life. Nursery chairs are available today and this article will focus on where to buy them.

Big box stores

Big box stores will be a source of nursery chairs for your child. The chairs can be feeding chairs in the form of high chairs or chairs that attach to the table or can be strapped to an existing chair. Chairs and stools for children can be available as well. Nursing chairs for nursing mothers can be available also, either rocking gliders or rocking chairs. Soft chairs are also available.

Children's stores

Stores that cater to children will be a great source for nursery chairs. The selection will be greater than a big box store which must cater for many needs. The chairs can be made of woods, be soft chairs like bean bags or inflated plastic, rocking chairs, small chairs for the table (some may even come with a table), high chairs for feeding, booster chairs, novelty chairs, and more. These chairs will come in many styles and heights and can suit almost any child. The chairs for nursing, whether glider/rockers, chairs with stools or recliners will also be available.

Antique stores and custom chairs

If you prefer to buy an antique nursery chair, these are available as well. You could find small, painted rocking chairs with cane seats, small chairs that come with small tables or are sold separately. You may also find antique high chairs and convertible chairs that turn into a high chair or a stroller which were popular in the Victorian era. Victorian nursing chairs are also available, as well as upholstered rocking chairs. If you intend on using an antique high chair, be aware that they are not as safe as a modern high chair and may be without a belt of foot rest. You may have to use a belt to help to secure your child into the chair to keep him or her from falling. If you are not happy with the chairs that are available, then you can either make or have custom nursery chairs made for your children. These can be made of wood or any material and in the style of your choice.
