When you are a tailor, a seamstress, a costumer or someone who enjoys sewing, buying fabric at discount prices is a boon. Fortunately, there is more than one source from which you can find quality fabric without paying a fortune.

Fabric stores are a source for cheap fabric. The cheap material can be found on sale tables, or advertised in end-of-season sales. If you are looking to make quilts or smaller projects, this could be a good source for discount fabric. If you are looking for large quantities of fabric from which to make drapery or upholstery for furniture, you may not find the yardage which you need.

Fabric warehouses

Fabric warehouses are a better source of discount fabric for two reasons: they often have more space to devote to larger bolts of fabric, and they are able to offer fabric at greater discounts than fabric stores. The downside is that you need to keep an eye on the stock, since it will most likely be fluid. Among some basic fabric like muslin, you will be able to find discontinued patterns and fabrics. This means that it pays to be prepared to snap up what you need for your projects plus extra, as you may not be able to find more of that fabric again.

Online stores

The third place to buy discount fabric is online. When you buy online, you will be able to find a wide selection of discount fabric. However, one of the main drawbacks is that you will not be able to feel the fabric or judge its true colour. Fortunately, online fabric stores realise this fact, and are willing to send out sample swatches when requested. When you see fabric which you like, ask for the swatch first to save yourself the headache of buying yards of fabric which you don't want and which you wont be able to return. Thanks to not having the expense of a brick and mortar store, cheap online fabric stores may be the best place to find discount fabric.
