Spalding University is a private co-educational university located in the American state of Kentucky. The college is strongly associated with the Roman Catholic religious order, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. There are now around 2000 students enrolled at the college, which takes its name from Catherine Spalding, the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

History and location

Spalding University can trace its origins to 1814, which was the year when the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth established the Nazareth Academy at Nazareth, near Bardstown, Kentucky. Originally an academy for young women, it then taught the standard secondary school curriculum with some college subjects additionally. It also functioned as a training centre for sisters who were to become teachers in other schools. Health care concern The college's strong association with health care began in 1821, when the Nazareth sisters took over the running of the infirmary at St. Joseph’s College in Bardstown. Overview of Nazareth College Nazareth College was opened in Louisville in 1920, the first four-year Catholic College for women in the state (or Commonwealth, more accurately). In 1940, it merged with Nazareth Junior College, which was opened in 1921. The two later split, but merged again in 1969, with all teaching activity moving to the Louisville campus. In 1973, the college became co-educational. Main campus The main campus is located at South Third Street in Louisville. It is an urban campus, situated between the main business or government district of the city and Old Louisville. Lousiville itself is the largest city in the state of Kentucky, and is the county seat of Jefferson county. It is well-known for being the venue of the famous horse race, the Kentucky Derby.

Learning and lifestyle

The college greatly benefits from its urban setting, making a host of Louisville's attractions easily accessible for students. Trolley and transit services run right through the campus, and some city features are actually within walking distance. Athletics and sports programme There is a respected athletics and sports programme at the college, with the school being an NCAA D-III institution. Nicknamed the Golden Eagles, the college's teams compete in the St. Louis
Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference.
