Making your box
Candy boxes can be made from thin cards or paper. You can find templates online that are easy to print and directions are given for folding and cutting. Procedures One of the simplest ways is to take a piece of card and make a diagonal cut at each corner, of about two inches. Fold all the sides round and bend the corners in. You can staple or glue the corners together and attach a handle if you wish. You can also decorate ready-made boxes. Cut down cereal boxes or cartons to the required depth, or use clean plastic take-away tubs or microwave meal dishes for clear gift boxes. Cardboards or paper will be easier to decorate but plastic containers will have durability and are made to last. Look around your kitchen and see what you can take to transform into a candy gift box.
Decorating your box
To decorate your candy box, first decide if you are attaching a handle as this should be done at the beginning. Then paint around the box for an even layer of colour. Next, decide how you are going to decorate your box. You could use rubber stamps to print around the edges or you could draw images and motifs.
Be creative and imaginative
You can also use cut-outs from magazines or pre-made flowers or butterflies bought in packs from arts supply shops. You could get very fancy and apply feathers or sequins, sparkles or pom poms.
Think of whether your gift is meant for a boy or a girl and decorate accordingly. You could use cartoon pictures or graphics that you have printed from free image websites and tailor your decoration to the recipient of your gift. You might also want to line your candy boxes and tissue paper can be used for this. They can be purchased from arts supply shops.
Finish
Crepe paper is heavier but can also be used. Make sure that no dye comes off on your candy. Arrange the paper so that it looks nice. You can cut a square to fit neatly into your box and a further square to cover the top. Or else, you could leave three or four inches of paper hanging over the box's edges and cut them into strips. Curl the strips with a pair of scissors to give a fantastic finish.
