Where to buy tabby kittens

Kittens are gorgeous, and tabby cats are always popular. So, where can you buy a tabby kitten? This article looks at the different places where the tabby kittens are available, either pedigree cats which are likely to have tabby kittens, or common or garden non-pedigrees or moggies.

From a breeder

If you want a pedigree tabby kitten, there is a good choice. Those breeds which can produce tabby kittens include the British shorthair, Persian, Maine Coon, Bengal cats and several other breeds. In particular, the British shorthairs will be advertised by colour, so you will find brown tabby, grey tabby, silver tabby and red tabby kittens specified. The last of these are what we usually think of as ginger kittens. Expect to pay around £300 or more for a pedigree tabby kitten.

From a rescue organisation

Cat rescue centres often have kittens which are available, and are flooded with them from spring to autumn - the kitten season. They are likely to have tabby kittens available, just call and ask. Most rescue organisations charge a fee or expect a donation when you re-home one of their kittens. Expect to pay around £50, although this will probably include essential vaccinations, spaying or neutering plus.

From a pet shop

Pet shops often have kittens for sale, and you are quite likely to be able to find tabby kittens among them. These may be a little cheaper than buying a kitten from a rescue organisation. However, be careful, as not all the pet shops are knowledgeable or reputable. Moreover, it is not unknown for pet shop for kittens which have fleas or worms or other health problems. That could cost quite a lot in veterinarian fees to sort out.

Other places to find tabby kittens

Many owners do not get around to spaying their female cats, and these produce unwanted kittens. So, every year, you can find ads for kittens which need homes in the local newspapers, supermarket notice boards or pet shops and charity shop windows. Some of these kittens will be tabby, so you may well be able to find one very cheaply or for free. However, again, do make sure that your new kitten does not have parasites or other health problems. Moreover, wherever you get your tabby kitten from, do remember that a kitten is for life, and should not be bought on a whim!
